Just Drop It

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

─ 1 Peter 5:6-7 ESV

Anxiety and worry weigh us down. It’s like we are covered in Velcro and the concerns of life attach themselves. We worry about our kids, no matter what age they are. Health issues in our family concern us. There are terrible reports on the news of what’s going on in the world today, and it’s so hard to watch that sometimes you just have to shut it off. It can be so overwhelming.

Instruction concerning anxiety and cares is simple and straight forward – cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). When we hear the word cast, many of us think of fishing, but that’s not what it means here. Cast literally means to throw it or to drop it. Peter encourages us to take whatever it is we’re carrying and let it go.

We want to hang onto it, because then we feel like we’re partly in control. Once we drop it, it’s out of our hands – no longer our responsibility. So, the first step is to let it go. The next steps can seem hard, but with the first step out of the way, it’s achievable.

Today’s One Thing

What are you holding onto today that you need to drop? On a piece of paper, write down what it is that you need to let go of. Ask the Lord to give you His wisdom and peace as you drop it into the trash. Each time you’re tempted to think about it – or worry – imagine yourself digging through the trash. Let that thought keep you from picking up the cares that now belong to Him.
