Love – the Overflow of a Life in Christ

But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness.

─ Galatians 5:22 AMPC

Everywhere Jesus went, He gave love away. Most of the lives He touched weren’t people that were going to add value to Him. He looked into their lives to see what he could do for them.

As Christians we can have an opportunity to influence others with the love of God. Christian love comes from the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22). Even if you’re a loving, nurturing, giving person, the work of the Holy Spirit far surpasses anything you would be able to do in the natural.

Christian love is choosing to act in the best interest of others. The Bible speaks of it as an action and an attitude, not just an emotion. Love is the by-product of our new life in Christ. We have no excuse for not choosing to love. When we find ourselves experiencing feelings that oppose love, we have the Holy Spirit to love and help us.

What would happen if those of us who are followers of Christ made intentional decisions to love people above all else. What if our love for God grew into a passion and perspective that the things that we have are only instruments to be used to reach people for Christ?

Today’s One Thing

Whom do you have difficulty loving right now? Ask the Lord to give you opportunities to demonstrate His love for that person this week. When He opens the door, be courageous to yield to the Holy Spirit and show His love toward that person.
