Speak from God’s Heart

“I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

─ Matthew 12:36-37

At some point in our lifetime, we have experienced the pain of hurtful words. Whether the words spoken were intentional or not, they were still painful. From a school bully to a jealous coworker, ugly words can make a lasting impact.

While we’d like for those that hurt us to be held accountable for their words, we must remember we are responsible for every word we speak. James said the tongue is a fire we must tame (James 3:6). Like a fire raging out of control, our words can cause irreparable damage.

Jesus said what’s in our heart comes out of our mouth (Luke 6:46). Often people say things without giving thought to what their words mean or the impact they have on the heart of the one they are speaking to.

It’s all about the heart – ours and God’s. Created in God’s image, our purpose is to share His love with others. Our words should encourage, inspire, uplift and bring joy. Sometimes it’s necessary to say hard things, but we are to speak the truth in love to others (Ephesians 4:15).

Today’s One Thing

Choose your words wisely today. Develop a habit to carefully consider what needs to be said. Speak from the heart with the love of God today.
