The Perfect Fit

“So you, by the help of your God, return, hold fast to love and justice, and wait continually for your God.”

─ Hosea 12:6

After graduation from a LIFE program at Clemson University, Colette spent three years trying to find a job. Even though she felt she performed well during interviews, the same three words appeared in the rejection emails: “not a good fit.” Collette knew what that meant – her disability, Down Syndrome, didn’t fit their corporate image. She found it confusing because several of her volunteer jobs asked her to volunteer full time, until she asked if she could receive pay, and then they abruptly didn’t need her anymore.

Instead of accepting defeat and embracing discouragement, she chose to hope for something more. Colette loved to bake, and while she was still in school, she had started her own company, Collettey’s LLC, which she originally viewed as a hobby. But, after so many rejection letters, she chose to turn her focus toward her passion – her cookie company.

Resolute to open her own business and make a living on her own, Collette demonstrated to others how she, and others like her, offered value to their community when provided the opportunity. Collette created two original cookie recipes that are now well known, the “Amazing Cookie” and the “Healthy Breakfast Cookie.”

In addition to owning her thriving business, Collette now travels the United States to share her inspirational story. She is an advocate for others to emphasize what they can do rather than what they can’t do. She uses her platform to encourage everyone to recognize and value what others have to give.
