True Peace

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

—John 14:27

America experienced enormous turmoil in 2017. From hurricanes to fires and mass shootings to riots. Court cases that made national news remind us that people continue to choose evil. It’s enough to make us live in fear of what might come.

But Jesus gave encouragement to His followers long ago with words that still give us hope. The peace He gives is not like any found in the world. He does not want us to feel troubled or live in fear. His peace is not fragile and broken by the next news alert. He calls us to trust in the Father and in Him.

Jesus urged us not to look at problems from our culture’s worldview but from God’s perspective. When we spend more time reading God’s word and praying than listening to news and rumors, we focus more on trusting God. And this is what fills our hearts with peace. Yes, we’ll still have trouble in the world, but we can face it with less stress and more peace because we know God is in charge.

Today’s One Thing
