Who Is God to You?
“You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your gentleness made me great.”
─ 2 Samuel 22:36
Throughout the book of Psalms, we get a glimpse of God through the picture the psalmist painted with his words – a picture of who God was to him. He perceived God to be his Rock, Savior, Provider, Deliver, Refuge, Shield and Strong Tower. He declared God’s characteristics through his praise. The psalmist’s open and transparent heart saw God as saving, praiseworthy, faithful, powerful, perfect, pure, giving, gentle and so much more.
Our praises are not only a melody about God, but a declaration of who God is to each of us individually. Who we say God is reveals the image we have of Him on the inside of us. Who we believe Him to be in our lives is reflected in our conversations about Him and with Him. If we see Him as a rule maker, a disciplinarian, or an enforcer who makes us do things we really don’t want to do, that impacts our thoughts and feelings about Him. But if we see God as a good and loving provider, giver and gentle father, that also determines how we approach Him.
Today’s One Thing
Think about the image you have of God. Renew your heart and mind today by reading the Bible and look for the characteristics of God and who His Word says He is.
