From Effort to Ease
Getting in Step with God
Have you ever felt like you’re pushing hard in your faith, yet something seems missing? Danny Gokey’s journey might shed some light on this. Danny recently shared his insights on this in a conversation with Family Life Radio, offering a fresh perspective.
Raised in a strict religious environment, Danny’s faith was initially shaped by his grandfather’s dramatic transformation. His grandfather, a man of the world, found God in a hospital room, thanks to a Gideon Bible. This marked the beginning of a new legacy for Danny’s family. But even with this strong foundation, Danny realized something crucial was missing in his understanding of faith.
Danny brings to light a common misconception among believers, where the journey feels more like a solo struggle than a partnership with God. “I thought that after Jesus saved me, I had to do the rest of the work.”
But revelation came to Danny through Scripture, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20 ESV).
It’s about letting Christ take the lead, transforming your efforts into a graceful dance with God.
Key Takeaways for Personal Faith
- Yield to the Spirit.
Danny’s breakthrough was realizing the importance of leaning into Christ within you. “I yield to the spirit of God living in me,” he says.
It’s an active surrender to God’s wisdom and power. It’s trusting that the Spirit within you can guide you better than you can guide yourself.
2. Understand the Cross.
Danny says, “The cross in your life now is when your will and the Father’s will cross, and you yield to the Father’s will over your will.”
Your faith journey involves moments of choosing God’s will over your own, a daily act of faith that brings you closer to the heart of God.
3. Applying Faith in Everyday Moment.
“I love being a dad,” Danny says. “It’s a challenging thing because it hurts me to discipline [my children].”
The most profound lessons of faith are often learned in the mundane moments of life.
“It’s funny because they’re young,” Danny shares. “One of my kids will fight back – they yell louder and cry harder – and it’s so funny because it’s something so trivial.”
Danny takes hope in parenting his children. “It’s Christ in me …. The whole New Testament is about about how we can’t do it. … Christ came to fulfill the law, but it just didn’t stop there. Now He wants to live out inside of us.”
And that’s why Paul says, “for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (Philippians 2:13 NIV).
Danny finds joy in the simple things of life – his family, his music. He reminds us to look for joy in our everyday moments and relationships. As you walk your faith journey, remember to cherish these small joys. They are gifts from God, reminders of His presence in our lives.
