How to Answer Life’s Surprises

Finding Purpose in Unexpected Turns

When life throws you a curveball, it’s easy to feel like you’ve lost control. But what if those unexpected turns are exactly where faith begins to shine? Rhett Walker’s story, shared during a Family Life Radio interview, offers a profound glimpse into the power of faith, surrender and recognizing our worth in God’s eyes.

Rhett shares, “The happiest day of my life was the day we got married. … I proposed after we found out she was pregnant. We knew we wanted to get married – just not that quickly. I went to my senior year, and it would have been easier, but I hit my knee in my house in the living room. I was like, ‘All right, let’s do this thing. Will you marry me?’”

Unexpected Turns

“We said, ‘All right, God, here’s our life.’” Rhett continues, “’We’ve screwed this up. Take our life and use it wherever you want to. Here’s our marriage. We don’t know how to be married. We’re babies having babies, and here’s our baby. Like you got to help us.’”

These words marked a pivotal moment for Rhett. This wasn’t their plan, but it became their turning point.

You might find yourself in situations you never planned for or dreamed of. It’s in these moments that surrendering to God can lead to the most profound growth. You’re opening up to His plan. God said in His Word, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV).

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

Rhett continues, “There’s something out there called imposter syndrome. And that’s where people feel like they don’t deserve something. They don’t fit in. They don’t belong. They’re not talented enough.”

Rhett’s admission of feeling out of place, even in his own story, strikes a chord with anyone who has faced imposter syndrome.

But look at Rhett’s words of encouragement, “You’re needed, and you’re wanted. I felt it a thousand times. I love what I get to do. It’s wild, though, because sometimes the music I put out is not what other people are putting out.”

In a world that often measures worth by success, God reminds us that our value lies in being His creation. When doubts cloud your mind, remember, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9 NIV).

You belong here, not by the world’s standards, but because you are chosen by God.

Living a Life of Purpose

Rhett and his wife’s decision to follow wherever God led has been a journey of unexpected joys and challenges. It’s the beauty of living a life surrendered to God’s will. When you decide to say, “We’ll go wherever you tell us to go,” you’re choosing to embrace life’s unpredictability as an adventure with God.

Surrendering to God’s will, recognizing our worth in His eyes and embracing the journey He has for us can transform our lives in ways we never imagined. As you navigate your own path, remember that you are not alone. You are wanted, needed and chosen by God. Let the unexpected turns become opportunities to deepen your faith, and let your doubts be a chance to reaffirm your worth in God’s unending love.

Take a moment to reflect on where you are right now. Maybe it’s time to kneel in your living room, metaphorically or literally, and say, “Alright, God, here’s my life.” Watch as He takes your offer and leads you into a future filled with hope, purpose and joy.
