Real, Raw and Honest Songwriting
Katy Nichole’s Choice for Authenticity
Christian artist Katy Nichole shared the strong motivations behind her music: authenticity, vulnerability, and an unwavering faith in God when she spoke to Family Life Radio.
Known for her powerful and moving song “In Jesus Name,” Katy’s music has touched innumerable lives, offering comfort, hope, and healing. Katy shared her commitment to being genuine in her songwriting, the challenges she faces as a Christian, and the stories of impact that affirm her faith.
“I made a promise to myself when I started writing Christian songs that I would show the real, the raw, and be honest,” she says. Authenticity isn’t just a choice for Katy; it’s the only way she knows how to create. Her music reflects the true struggles and triumphs of a life devoted to faith, resonating deeply with her listeners.
Authenticity’s Impact
Being vulnerable in her music allows Katy to connect with her audience on a deeper level. She believes that hiding the difficult parts of her journey would be a disservice to her faith and to those who listen to her songs.
“Being a Christian, it’s not all daisies and rainbows. If anything, it’s actually very challenging when you’re chasing after Jesus.” Katy says.
Honesty about the challenges of her faith journey brings a relatable and comforting message to many through her music.
She acknowledges that spiritual battles are a significant part of the faith journey. “The devil’s chasing after you just as fast, trying to catch you because he hates that you love the Lord. He hates it. But, I’m like, ‘You have no chance. You stand zero chance against my God!” Her confidence in God’s power and protection is unwavering, and she sees her openness about these struggles as a way to defy the devil’s attempts to undermine her faith.
Being vulnerable, Katy believes, is another way to thwart the devil’s plans. “The devil probably hates that too. He hates that. I’m talking about the way that my God has defied the odds of what he thought.” By sharing her struggles and the ways God has worked in her life, she hopes it encourages others to remain steadfast in their faith.
Encounters with Fellow Believers
Katy finds the stories she hears from fans humbling and inspiring. “‘In Jesus Name’ has been the biggest song for me, and it has been one of the songs that people really have been touched by. The stories are pretty heavy, honestly. I get a lot of really heavy stories, but the thing that makes me so grateful and so happy is hearing the stories of healing and miracles.”
One particularly touching story involves a young girl battling cancer who found comfort through “In Jesus Name.” “Getting to meet her was so sweet because she wasn’t sure if she was going to be awake enough by the time ‘In Jesus Name’ happened in the show.” Understanding the girl’s situation, Katy made a special effort to connect with her. “I was like, I’ll go get my ukulele. And so we just sat across from each other in two chairs, and I sang ‘In Jesus Name’ to her over and over.”
This personal interaction left a deep impression on Katy. “She was just the sweetest soul. And she had such a heart for Jesus.” The young girl’s faith and the support of her family were incredibly moving for Katy. “Knowing that she was really holding on tight to the Lord was just really beautiful. And I was grateful to be a witness to that.”
Gratitude and God’s Movement
“I have an immense amount of gratitude for so many things. Definitely the way that God has just moved in my life over this past year.” She acknowledged the blessings of her career, relationships, and the lessons of trust and obedience that God has taught her.
One of the key lessons Katy has learned is the importance of trust and obedience. “He’s just been so kind to me in this season of life and, in many seasons of life.” By being obedient to God’s will, Katy believes that she is able to produce the fruits she longs for in her life and music. Her gratitude extends to her family, friends, and the fans who support her music.
Through her music, Katy invites listeners to embrace vulnerability and trust in God’s plan. “At the end of the day, we’re all chasing after the same thing. We all want to be loved. We want to be seen. We want to be known.”
No matter the struggles we face, there is a purpose in our pain, and a Savior who loves us unconditionally. Katy encourages all of us to embrace our own vulnerabilities and trust in God’s unfailing love.
