The Difference Between Humility and Blaming Yourself

New Research Says Blaming Yourself

Might Be Dangerous For Your Health

A new study came out recently saying that blaming yourself when things go wrong could be linked to obsessive-compulsive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, which can lead to depression. So, does this mean that when I mess up cleaning the counters for my wife that I can blame her instead of me? Hmm…I’m going to take a guess and say “no”.

Now, of course, this study isn’t saying to blame somebody else for your problems or else your health will suffer. This is more for you, the type of person who thinks that every bad thing happens because of them. I’m here to tell you that this is not true! Yes, there are times we all fall short and those are times we take a deep breath, accept responsibility, and apologize if necessary. But, when we continuously do it when it isn’t our fault, that’s when it becomes dangerous.

While I was thinking about that, I was reminded of what the Bible says about humility. 1 Peter 5:5 says that we should “be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility for ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble”. But sometimes, humility can get mixed up with putting yourself down. A good way to remind yourself which is which sometimes is to say that blaming yourself is you worrying about the things you can’t deal with. Humility is realizing you can’t deal with it and giving it to God instead.

So if you ever feel like nothing is going right and it’s “all your fault”, just remember who you are in Christ. After all, He says that you are fearfully and wonderfully made. You can remind yourself of that when life throws its lemons at you, and then let God make the lemonade.

Have a great weekend!
