Join Kankelfritz every morning and start your day with your favorite Christian music, encouraging conversation and fun! In addition to his quirky, pastoral outlook on life, Kankelfritz is a devoted husband and dad that you’ll feel like you’ve known for years. Here’s what he says about his new role as morning show host:
“There is huge power in how we start each day. I love helping someone begin their day with laughter, positive thoughts, and songs that help put our focus on God, who wants to give us new mercies each morning!”
Kankelfritz has heard every possible pronunciation of his name. And they’re mostly wrong. But at least he can spot a telemarketer a mile away! “Is Mr. Kan-Ke, Kanker, uhhhh Kinkle-zits there?” Most definitely not!
Lots of people wonder if it’s his real name, and it is. Once a name he disliked, he’s grown to love it. It’s a one-of-a-kind name for a one-of-a-kind radio show host. Kankelfritz has more than 28 years of experience, and he got his start on country, rock and light rock stations before following God’s lead into Christian radio. He’s served as morning show co-host on national networks and major markets like Houston and Tulsa. Now he brings his laughter and authenticity to Family Life Radio listeners.
He, his wife Becky and their two children live in Tucson, and the desert is a far cry from his youth spent in Seattle and more recently their time in Indiana.
What’s your show like?
I love living my life on the air. That means I share everything from funny things that happen throughout the day to some of the rough stuff too. I don’t take myself too seriously, and I want to talk about what you want to talk about—growing in faith, building families, loving God and others well. Let’s share our stories and cheer each other on through life.
Why are listener stories so important to you?
There’s just something amazing about hearing someone share their story. When we share our stories, we begin to build relationships, and we can always learn from others. Sometimes our view of God is based on our personal experiences, and that’s such a limited view of who He is. When we hear how He’s at work in the lives of those around us, our view of Him grows. And that’s a pretty great thing.
Why are you excited about being part of Family Life Radio?
God is doing something great at Family Life Radio, and I’m excited to be part of it. I’m especially excited about the idea of living intentionally. What worthwhile thing have any of us done that’s happened by accident? We all have goals, and I want to help you meet yours.
How’d you get started in radio?
When I was fifteen years old, my aunt told me that I had a nice voice and suggested I try being on the radio. I’d never even thought about it before that. But there was a radio station at a high school in Seattle, and, as a teenager, I got my first taste of being on air. I was hooked. I majored in broadcasting at John Brown University and have been behind a mic ever since. From Grand Rapids to Tulsa to Houston, it’s taken me all over the country.
What’s something not a lot of people know about you?
I love doing my taxes. Really! It’s a puzzle every year to figure out how all the pieces fit together for the best result. I like figuring out how things work. Maybe that’s why I like fixing things around my house too. Washers, dryers and refrigerators—if it’s broken, I’ll figure out how to make it work again.
If you weren’t on the radio, what would you be doing?
I’d probably be a pastor. I have a degree from seminary, but when God called me to Christian radio, I realized I get to be both an on-air friend and pastor. I love getting calls from listeners, who I know aren’t believers, and I get to share the Gospel with them. Being part of what God is doing in their lives gives me goosebumps.
